The world is in a state of alarm as the decline of pollinators threatens not only our food supply but also our health. The Jumla district in Nepal, a remote and self-sufficient community, serves as a microcosm of the larger crisis. Here, local beekeepers have noticed a concerning trend: the disappearance of bees, with roughly half of their population vanishing over the past decade. This is not merely an ecological concern but a public health issue, as these bees are vital for the production of crops and the health of the community. The study conducted by Thomas Timberlake and his colleagues at the University of York reveals the critical role of pollinators in the Jumla district. They found that pollinators are directly responsible for over 20% of the inhabitants' vitamin A, vitamin E, and folate intake, as well as 44% of their farming income. This is the first study to provide direct evidence of the bond between pollinators and human health, and it highlights the urgent need for action. The decline of pollinators is not just a local issue but a global one. As forests, grasslands, and wildflower meadows are converted into industrial-scale agriculture and development, bees and butterflies are losing their habitats and food sources. Pesticides, particularly neonicotinoids, are also taking a toll on bee populations. The IPBES, an intergovernmental platform for biodiversity science, estimated that over 40% of bee species may be threatened globally, with many lacking sufficient population data. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species found that at least 172 bee species in Europe are at risk of disappearing. The decline of wild pollinators is causing adverse health effects, with between 3% and 5% of vegetable, fruit, and nut production being lost due to inadequate pollination. This is not just a problem for isolated communities like Jumla; it has global implications. A modeling study in the Lancet found that if all the world's pollinators were to collapse, an additional 1.4 million people would die every year from malnutrition-related diseases. The connection between human health and pollinator health is complex. While most studies have focused on the nutrients derived from food, about 80% of the world's population relies on herbal medicine for primary healthcare. Ecologists estimate that about 28,000 medicinal plants, including echinacea and chamomile, are pollinated by insects. The loss of pollinators also affects the green spaces that benefit our mental health and improve environmental quality. Drawing clear links between human health and pollinator health remains a challenge. However, studies like the one conducted in Jumla can help to convey the importance of conserving bees to the public. The findings also have important implications for public policy, as quantifying the health and economic dividends of conservation interventions can support government action. In Nepal, NGOs are working with the government to create a national pollinator strategy. Simple interventions, such as planting wildflowers, providing bee nesting sites, and reducing pesticides, could help raise farmer income and improve diets. The decline of pollinators is a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of our world. It is not just about saving bees; it is about preserving our health and the health of our planet. As temperatures rise and agricultural practices intensify, the impact of pollinator loss will only grow. The time to act is now, before it's too late.
